Another one that's had some mention, and DOES get together, is the Seoul Writers facebook group; there was an announcement about them earlier, here at the hub.

RE: Facebook,

Don't bother with the groups that are people just starting groups for no real reason. It seems to me like the groups that are formed for a specific purpose are the most active in terms of actual events and meetings. The "Save the Animals" group working with the Daejon dog shelter have done a good job, as have a couple soccer and American Football clubs.

I'll have to check out tumblr.com. orkut.com is another one I forgot to mention.

You know, I'm starting to get enough feedback on this to justify a part 2 ;-)

Maybe next week. Thanks for all the comments! Keep 'em coming!

thanks for this useful post. any leads on facebook groups that actually arrange get-togethers and connections, rather than just hosting repositories of konglish pictures?
...might be a useful topic for a future post.

RE: Skype: Skype has a "call forwarding" option under "tools". All you need to do is input your number in Korea as the phone number to forward Skype calls to. You have to pay the rate for a call from the U.S. to Korea I believe. Still, we're talking pennies...

Ning was the service I was thinking of when I wrote the line about creating social networks, but I couldn't think of it! Thanks! I'd totally support someone (Maybe HubofSparkle?) creating a Ning site, but need to do some more poking around before I could do it myself.

Wow, I totally forgot about Friendster. I used to use that too.

As for Last.fm, I think it's a really cool concept but at this particular moment I've incredibly frustrated with it because any time I open any kind of media file on my computer, last.fm opens up and starts blaring it's own music on top of whatever it was I was listening to in the first place.

On top of that, I can't get the darn thing to uninstall, so I've kind of considered Last.fm to basically be spyware. To be fair, though, I didn't really spend much time playing with it before it just started annoying me.

I swear by Twitter. I don't know of many expats there, but I keep in touch with friends in podcasting there. I've learned about new podcasts, TV shows, new media in general--stuff I'd never hear about otherwise.
