On Twitter

Building on the previous article I wrote about Web 2.0 for expats for a series of recent articles in my new project, Korpreneur.com, I thought a more detailed discussion about Twitter would be interesting. Many first sign up for Twitter, look around for a couple minutes and fail to see the point and never come back. But that tide is changing.

I was recently a guest on the SeoulPodcast, and after the show I got to talking with the other guests about the various social media they use. A few of them were on Twitter but nobody was really devoting much time to it. Except for me.

Twitter has many, many uses for business. Jon Stewart even gave his own explanation of it. I’ll leave it to you to go into all of that, and concentrate my post on the phases I’ve gone through in my own usage of Twitter.

I still don’t get it…can’t figure out why anyone would want to “follow” me unless they were KGB or some other intelligence agency….

Hi Mark. I think TWITTER is for people who sit at their computer all day and wonder what other people are doing. Like, if you had a good salad with your lunch, and you wanted to let people know about it. You would TWITTER about the yummy pear in your salad and someone can read about it and wonder how good it was.

I don’t think its too useful for business.

Exactly. As if 98% of people have anything worth “following.” I hope I never get sucked into this.

But besides Twitter another good way to build your online business is to write a few paragraphs on a community website as a teaser about an article, and then direct people to read it in full on your own site.

Wow, so much negativity for what was trying to be a helpful article…

Wondergirl has it pretty much correct. If, for example, you’re a salad connoiseur, you’d probably be following other salad connoisseurs. So the above posting about the place that puts pears in their salads would be useful information to you. If you’re not following interesting people and if you’re not interesting yourself, that’s your own fault.

Brian, I posted the article in this manner in a response to a request by Roboseyo (the main person in charge) in an email that went out last week to try doing it in just this way. Every single other article I have posted on here, that I can remember, has been posted in full. This time I decided to try something different, and followed the suggestion. I’m sorry this offends you so greatly.

Geek in Korea has a good article about why he likes twitter. Check it out.

I’m don’t use Twitter myself, but it was amazing how important it became during the Mumbai terrorist massacre. Yes, it’s kind of pointless most of the time, but in many ways it gave a more accurate picture of what was happening, where to go, and where and how to donate blood than the “real” Indian/World media.

    Go figure.

I would not say that people who don’t use TWITTER are not interesting people. Now THAT is negative.

Here’s an interesting quote from the CGSC blog:

…twittering is like being in an online chat room where everyone is talking, nobody is listening, or you may not even know who is listening.
