Paul Ajosshi Wants You To See Old Partner

Photo from the Korea Times

Paul Ajosshi went to see “Old Partner,” the smash-hit Korean documentary about an old couple and the cow they’ve owned for decades.

I want to see it too, and you should to, not just because it’s great, but also to support Korean indie films, and English subtitling of Korean films IN KOREA.

Go read Paul Ajosshi’s write-up.

More info and pictures about the film.

Joy liked it, too.

I saw the movie without subtitles. Even though I could only understand about 10% of the words spoken, I found the movie to be a breath of fresh air.

My girlfreind mentioned how her father gets angry when rice goes to waste. This movie really makes one appreciate one’s rice.

There are showings with simultaneous standard Korean stubtitles and English subtitles at Indiespace in Myeongdong, and apparently at Yongsan CGV, also.

I’ve heard it’s great. But I need to see Watchmen first. :)

It appears that “Handphone” is also being shown with english subtitles at the Lotte Cinema in 중구 (Which is the one in Myeong Dong). However, listings only go up till Wednesday… Hopefully they’ll keep showing it through the week, but who knows.

If you are interested it is being shown at 1215, 1700, 2145 and 2410 on Tuesday 3rd March and Wednesday 3rd March.

Good news for those of you in Busan, “Handphone” is also being shown at the Lotte Cinema there. Times are 1025, 1310, 1555, 1840, 2125 and 2410 for both Tuesday 3rd March and Wednesday 4th March.

    I couldn’t find the myeongdong indiespace listings for “Old Partner” on naver.com or daum.net, but the CGV Yongsan showings for Tuesday 3rd March and Wednesday 4th March are 0850, 1040, 1230, 1420, 1610, 1800, 2000, 2155, 2345.

Catch them while you can, but I have a feeling you’d be better off watching “Old Partner” than “Handphone”.

Where did you find that information, Paul, and is it a regularly updated bulletin? I’d like to include it on the “useful stuff to know” part of The Hub of Sparkle.

Just called indiespace and they only have two showings in the next week or so.

Sunday 8th March at 2.30 pm and Tuesday 10th March at 6.20 pm. Beyond that the lady I spoke to is not sure of when other showings may be, but over the next eight days there are only two showings with english subtitles. For those of you with busier schedules Yongsan may be your best bet if they continue to give screen time to the film…

I looked on the movie listings pages for naver.com and daum.net. It’s all in Korean, but fairly easy to use if you can read hangul.

    Naver movie listings:
    http://movie.naver.com/movie/reservation/index.nhn

    Daum normal movie listings:
    http://ticket2.movie.daum.net/yes24/default.aspx

    Daum CGV movie listings:
    http://ticket.movie.daum.net/cgv/BoxofficeNew.aspx

On all of them the first column is films, the second cinemas and the third dates. You’ll need to know which area your cinema is in to find it easily. I go to CGV Yongsan so I’d look in 용산구 for example.

If enough people are interested in getting regular updates on film times in Seoul, I’d be happy to start a weekly column, but I’d have to limit the number of cinemas listed. Where do people normally go? Yongsan, Coex, elsewhere? What listings would be most useful?

Can anyone who has seen the non-English subtitled showing tell me if there are Korean subtitles?

Does anyone know what’s going on with the plans to make English subtitles regularly available in two Seoul cinemas?

Old Partner’s run at CGV Yongsan is continuing over the weekend and Handphone is being shown with English subtitles in Myeong-dong, Busan and Ansan until Friday. I’ve put up times and such here: http://ajosshi.blogspot.com/2009/03/this-weeks-film-listings-march-5-8.html

    Hi Roboseyo, have done so.

Old Partner is still going at CGV Yongsan and there are screening listings going till next Wednesday at the moment.

Handphone has got screenings this weekend at the Lotte Cinemas in Myeong-dong, Busan and Ansan and the staff at the cinema told be that they will screen it next week as well, but with fewer times allocated.
