Seoul Taxi Fare Hike in June

Just so it doesn’t come as a surprise to anyone, you’ll be paying an additional W500 for your taxi rides soon.  The good news is that you’ll be less likely to get the guy sucking air through his teeth and shaking his head “no” when you tell him you only want to go 2km.

SEOUL — Starting taxi fares in Seoul will increase from 1,900 to 2,400 won June 1, Seoul city officials said Thursday.

The 26 percent hike is meant to discourage taxi drivers from not picking up passengers who want to travel short distances, and to compensate for the higher cost of operating taxis, a city spokesman said. Seoul last increased its taxi fares in June 2005.

Seoul taxis are so cheap, a 500 increase is still a pittance. This doesn’t bother me at all, and if the taxi driver stops turning me away, I’ll be happy.

Now if they only do something to encourage the drivers to accept your T-Money card to pay for the fare. I have yet to meet any that will allow me to use mine.

really? I haven’t had a problem in months ~ just make sure you hail the right kind of cab (with the little “card cab” orange sign on the roof), and as you approach your destination tell them that you’ll use your Tmoney card. I had a few problems when the system was first introduced, but it’s been smooth sailing for a while now.
And I have to agree with Rob, 500 won is a tiny increase. I’m all for it.

Nope. Never had the driver accept my card–ever–despite them having the card reader right there between the seats. I think from now on, if they give me the big X with their arms and say no I’m going to just shrug and get out without paying. If they don’t want my money, who am I to argue?
