Well, it seems that way at least in the government sector….
“Managers come to us asking for men, complaining that they have too many women in their office,” said Mr. Kim at the Foreign Ministry. “There aren’t enough men to go round. They’re in short supply.”
The recent surge of women in the public [...]

Glass Ceiling Broken in Korea?
Hub of Birthrate?
Interesting how they’re tying an anti-abortion campaign to an immigration policy.
SEOUL, Nov. 25 (Xinhua) — The South Korean government plans to step up its efforts to fight the issue of its shrinking birthrate through launching an anti-abortion campaign and seeking more foreign immigrants, a presidential council said Wednesday.
"The government decided to launch [...]
Bangs Head Against Wall for the Umpteenth Time
Look about the English speaking section of K-Blogland and you will encounter no end of posts on Korea’s crap record in punishing sex offenders over the last little while. For a start see Gusts of Popular Feeling, for a primer. Amazingly the Korean side of the Internet has also been up in arms of late [...]
Survey Much?
Over the last couple of weeks I have been running a survey in an attempt to see what’s going on in the Foreigner community here in Seoul.
It is a very small sample – though not restricted to E2 Visa holders it equates to about 1% of the 20000 Language teachers in Korea. Neither should it [...]
North Korea Makes the Switch
and we’re not talking cellphone service providers:
The parliament changed the word “communism” with “Songun,” military-first ideology, in their constitution in April, sez the English Chosun Ilbo. Meanwhile, Songun is now ranked as highly as Juche (self-sufficiency) in the North Korean constitution.
While ROK Drop’s analysis of this kind of stuff is way better than my own, [...]
Unified Korea could Surpass Japan, Germany
Investment Bank Goldman Sachs suggested on Monday that if North and South Korea combined, they could surpass Germany, and maybe even Japan, in GNP in the next 30 or 40 years. North Korea’s large, cheap workforce, combined with South Korea’s technical and engineering ability, could create a SuperMegaKoreazord (which is my suggestion for the name [...]
The bill banning racial discrimination heats up
Not too long ago, I wrote about some proposed legislature that would ban racial discrimination in Korea. While fully in favor and supportive of the bill, I wonder just what it is that’s getting the infamous Korean netizens riled up. From the Korea Herald:
Rep. Jun Byung-hun of the main opposition Democratic Party on Sunday posted [...]
Human Rights Commission Responds
You will recall earlier in the year that, although I don’t necessarily agree with them on the whole, ATEK, the Association of English Teachers in Korea, filed a complaint with the Korean Human Rights Commission(HRC) regarding the testing of E2 Visa applicants for HIV and Opioid / psychoactive / psychotropic use, on the basis that [...]
Question of the Day: Can Making A Mockery Of Korean Parliament Be Made Punishable?
So Korea’s Democrat party once again has made a mockery of the democratic process, by walking out of Parliament after making an unreasonable demand, without stopping to, you know, talk, about anything.
Now, Michael Breen, in one of my favorite Breen quotes, once wrote in a KT article about the way the CSAT exam reinforces the [...]
“Seoul to Vaccinate 10 Mil. Against Influenza A”
So says the Korea Times:
South Korea plans to vaccinate 10 million people against influenza A by the end of this year to stem the rapid spread of the disease that has so far claimed three lives in the country.
Health and Welfare Minister Jeon Jae-hee said of the 13.3 million people, including young children and pregnant [...]
김대중 前대통령 서거*
Rob beat me to it, but I add my 2cents worth on the passing of Kim Dae Jung.
It hasn’t been a good year for former South Korean Presidents.
Sad news that this afternoon Kim Dae Jung died at Severance Hospital in Seoul this afternoon. At age 85 he had been struggling with pneumonia since mid last [...]
R.I.P. Kim Dae-jung
Two ex-presidents in one year.
NYT Reports ex-president of Korea Kim Dae-jung died of organ failure at age 83. He was the president who cleaned up the mess after the 1997 Asian Financial crisis, and won the Nobel Peace prize for his still-controversial “Sunshine Policy” toward North Korea.
